Poetry is

Sometimes poetry is like
Squeezing the last bit of toothpaste
Out of the end of the tube.
That hurts my fingers.
And often stresses me out
Because I think maybe I won’t
Get to brush my teeth
When I expected to.
That’s what poetry feels like sometimes.

I try to look for a remarkable
Event or sight or person
To spark some imaginative flare.
But sometimes nothing happens.

Like today I overslept
Rushed to work
Worked
Went to the bank
Brought some books
Broke my diet
And played ball with the dog.

Nothing remarkable yet.
It’s okay.
It’s like trying to get the last bit of
Soap from a squeezy bottle today.
That’s what poetry can be like.
