The Mediterranean

There was a smell on the familiar
South-western wind last night
As the hot, dry heat of the day cooled
And mixed with the salt off the sea.
It smelt like home
But less intense.
It amazed me and made me want to
Lie in the grass but it was damp
With dew or settled mist.
It brought back the memories
Of the Mediterranean dog days
And bonfires and sweet cider.
Of desert and unpolluted skies.

I remember now how important it is
To follow your nose.
And to smile, because the world
Will smile with you.
Always have everything under control.
